A look behind the story of 'Bodega Urbina'
The family vineyards of Bodegas Urbina in Cuzcurrita del Río Tirón, in the heart of Rioja Alta, have a history of more than 150 years and are considered one of the classic names of the region. The story began in 1870, when Salvador Urbina produced his first wines here. Several of these original vineyard parcels are still cultivated today, giving the estate a rare continuity from generation to generation.
Through Ciriaco and Paquita Urbina, and later Pedro and Jesús Ángel, the winery continued to grow into a respected producer within Rioja. In 1986, a new cellar was built and stainless steel fermentation tanks were introduced, allowing traditional winemaking methods to be combined with modern vinification techniques.
Today, the fourth generation of the Urbina family leads the estate. They combine academic wine knowledge with decades of vineyard experience, continuing the winery with great respect for tradition and terroir.

The vineyards of Bodega Urbina
The Climate
Bodegas Urbina is located in Cuzcurrita del Río Tirón, in the Rioja Alta subregion, one of the cooler areas of Rioja. The climate is strongly influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, bringing more rainfall and milder temperatures than in other parts of Rioja. The combination of warm days and cool nights allows the grapes to ripen slowly. This helps preserve their fresh acidity, aromatic finesse and elegance—characteristics that are typical of classic Rioja Alta wines.
The Terroir
Urbina’s vineyards are located around the Tirón River, a tributary of the Ebro. The soils mainly consist of limestone-rich clay and alluvial deposits (sand, gravel and limestone).
These soils provide:
- Good drainage, forcing the vines to root deeper
- Minerality and structure in the wines
- A balanced expression of ripe fruit and freshness
The terroir of Rioja Alta is known for wines that are elegant, refined and suitable for long ageing.
